The institute was set up on May 1, 1948, by the recommendations of the BC Roy Committee through the amalgamation of various defence medical organizations. The “Graduate Wing” of AFMC was established on August 4, 1962, to provide a sustainable and steady intake of medical officers for the Indian Armed Forces. Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical College (GSMC), Mumbai, was established in 1926. The medical college and hospital are located in central Mumbai, in an area called Parel. Institutional priorities have been medical relief, medical education, and medical research.
The college is affiliated with the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), Nashik.
