The institute was set up on May 1, 1948, by the recommendations of the BC Roy Committee through the amalgamation of various defence medical organizations. The “Graduate Wing” of AFMC was established on August 4, 1962, to provide a sustainable and steady intake of medical officers for the Indian Armed Forces. The institute is presently affiliated with the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences and is recognised by the MCI for conducting undergraduate and various postgraduate medical courses.
The Armed Forces Medical College in Pune is spread across 120 acres. It is acknowledged for its campus and residential facilities. The following are some of the standout features of the AFMC Pune infrastructure.
Library: The AFMC Pune library has 3,337 volumes, 26 online publications, and four print publications, including national and international nursing journals.
Hostel: The hostel and mess facilities are well-equipped, with enough room for students and trainee officers. The dining hall, pantry, and sitting room are all located in the central mess, which was completed in 1845. AFMC Pune hostel facilities include co-curricular activities, such as a basketball court and a hobby room, for students’ overall growth.

Seth G.S. Medical College, Mumbai:
Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical College (GSMC), Mumbai, was established in 1926. The medical college and hospital are located in central Mumbai, in an area called Parel. Institutional priorities have been medical relief, medical education, and medical research.
The college is affiliated with the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), Nashik.
